The City of South Pasadena has garage sale regulations to minimize the effects of traffic, noise, and signs in residential areas while permitting residents to sell unwanted items.
Permit Required
Residents must obtain a permit from the Planning and Building department to hold a garage or yard sale. The one-page Garage Sale Permit Application can be downloaded and submitted by clicking the link below*. The permit application may also be faxed to (626) 403-7221. Permits can also be issued over-the-counter in the Planning & Building Department, 1414 Mission Street, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Monday-Thursday) and 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. There is no charge for on-line or faxed applications. A $6.00 charge applies for over-the-counter permits.
Frequency and Term of Sales
Garage sales are limited to two times per year per residence, for a maximum of two consecutive days for each sale.
Signs
Signs may not be erected, posted on, or attached to any public property. This includes telephone poles, power poles, street lights, street signs, city trees; or on sidewalks, in crosswalks or on curbs.
- Stapling signs/flyers on public trees (including parkway trees) is strictly prohibited.
- Signs/flyers on trees are permitted only at the garage sale location.
- Signs may be posted on private property with the property owner’s permission.
- Any signs/flyers used to advertise the garage sale must be removed within 24 hours after the end of the sale.
Signs illegally posted will be removed by the City (including those for sales to be held at a future date), and the person/s responsible for posting them may be assessed the costs of the cleanup and removal.
FAILURE TO ADHERE TO GARAGE SALES REGULATIONS WILL RESULT IN A VIOLATION OF THE SOUTH PASADENA MUNICIPAL CODE SEC. 36.410.050.B.2.D.
* By submitting an on-line or faxed application you eliminate a trip to City Hall, thus reducing air pollution and traffic congestion. Thank you for helping to improve the quality of life in South Pasadena. |
