The South Pasadena Fire Department provides the highest level of emergency medical services to the community through the EMS Division. We provide both Basic and Advanced (Paramedic level) Life support services to the ill and injured.
The Emergency Medical Services Division is charged with the responsibility of providing fast and efficient emergency medical care. The program operates a fully equipped advanced life support ambulance and a paramedic assessment engine to provide rapid and efficient emergency medical care to the community. The ALS ambulance is staffed with two Firefighter Paramedics. The assessment engine is staffed with a minimum of one Firefighter Paramedic and two Emergency Medical Technicians.
The EMS division operates via “fee-for-service.” Allowable service charges are determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. (For additional information on current service fees please see their website at http://ems.dhs.lacounty.gov/AmbulanceLicensing/AmbLic.htm and then click on “General Public Ambulance Rates.”) However, residents and business owners can be exempted from most fees associated with emergency medical care by subscribing to the Fire Med program. For Fire Med subscribers, the Fire Department recovers medical costs directly from the private medical insurance provider, Medicare, or Medi-Cal, in lieu of billing individuals who receive ambulance services. For additional information please see our link to the Fire Med program.
Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement and continuing education of personnel related to EMS issues is provided by UCLA Center for Prehospital Care under the direction of Lyn Riley, RN MICN MEd.
