The role of the sergeant is to provide support and direction to the Field Officers. The Sergeant also has many administrative responsibilities and duties, such as scheduling, work assignments, report approval, etc.
The Patrol Sergeant helps in directing information, aids in cooperatively determining priorities and deployment, and assists in acquiring departmental, as well as external resources. The Sergeant can also vary the deployment of Officers and specialized units to accomplish objectives and balance the demands of calls for service and departmental objectives. They act as teacher, coach and mentor to both Police personnel and community leaders.
The Sergeants report and account to the Field Services Captain in both shift command and area supervision responsibilities. Final review of area command efficiency and proficiency shall be by the Chief of Police. |
